Port au Choix

This is our 50th blog post. Maybe we will get to 100 🤷‍♂️. We enjoy the blogging process and the benefit of keeping a real time travel diary (well kinda real time-let’s be honest). And soon we’ll appreciate that we put it in writing and don’t have to rely solely on our less than perfect memories or the date stamp of our photographs.

Leaving Gros Morne NP we wondered what else in Nfld could dazzle us. Stay tuned!

We are heading north to Saint Anthony. A year ago we weren’t sure this leg of the trip would be possible in an EV. Thank you Nfld Power.

First stop is Arches Provincial Park. Wow!

Next stop is Port au Choix National Historic Site.

In 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht limited settlement rights for French fishers in Nfld allowing them to fish seasonally only. We see many French place names along the west coast (mostly pronounced with an English inflection).

This area is an archeological bonanza. Digs have been happening for many decades.

The digs have confirmed that Maritime Archaic Indians lived in the area thousands of years ago. Sacred burial grounds were found at Port au Choix.

Several sculptures represent the way of life of indigenous peoples.

The visitor centre is worth a tour.

Caribou hang out at Port au Choix!

One charms the folks at the visitor centre.

We see a few more caribou as we drive out a couple of kilometres to the Point Roche Lighthouse. A good sign.

The intel is that the lighthouse is a good caribou viewing location. When we first arrive – no caribou.

It was windy; we pull out cheese and crackers for a picnic. There is a picnic table just to the right of that staircase and sheltered from the wind.

And then the herd make their way along the shore to the lighthouse.

People are supposed to stay 30 meters away
Mom and babe

Mom and babe come around the far side of the lighthouse and the next thing I know are munching on this clover. They are oblivious to me. I am about 2 meters away.

Mom is completely ignoring me. She turns to look toward the water.
Okay Mom is moving on…
Babe stays back
