Meat Cove

It’s true. Google knows you better than you know yourself.

Back in March/April while we were planning the trip I started getting Meat Cove videos popping up in my feed. It’s a small fishing village, the most northerly settlement in Nova Scotia, at the end of a notorious gravel road. The private campsite there looked pretty interesting.

Between charging anxiety and concern about the road, it didn’t make it onto the original itinerary. But after speaking with several fellow travellers we decided to go.

As it turned out, we had plenty of EV range from the charger in Cheticamp and the gravel road was nothing to worry about – a superhighway compared to the one near Port aux Basques.

We got to the campground early that day and has our pick of spots, choosing one with shoreline views in both directions. This for me was the coolest campsite of the trip.

Close to, but not on, the tip.
View to the west.
View to the east.
The coolest site, too scary for us tho.
The narrow path to this one is definitely a “ no fall zone”
Yikes

We were a bit lazy that day, so we bought lunch at the food truck. Truth is Val was feeling pretty terrible and I was catching what she had.

Good call though, the crab rolls were incredible. So good in fact that we scheduled our hiking so we could be back before closing to try the seafood chowder for dinner.

Like I said, we were both a bit under the weather so we did the relatively short “Little Grassy” hike. AllTrails calls it, wrongly according to locals, “The Meat Cove Overlook”. The views were pretty amazing.

Zoom in to see the campsite and the sketchy one on the point.

You can descend almost to the shoreline on this trail.

On the way, we met a young traveller from Germany, Marlene, who is working at a series of organic farms across Canada. A very interesting way to travel.

Marlene spotted some whales feeding offshore. Too far away for descent photos, but nice to see.

The ascent back.

Short hike, but we were bagged. Time for happy hour, then some seafood chowder for dinner.

The chowder was excellent and is tied for #4 so far. Pretty good for a remote food truck!

The next morning, clouds started to gather making for some interesting landscapes.

We packed up and moved on towards Antigonish and Cape Breton Highlands National Park where Val had booked an oTENTic ahead of some expected rain.

We quickly visited the Meat Cove beach, just because.

And took a few shots of the cove from down the road.

Google was right. Going to Meat Cove was a great call
