Les Isles de la Madeleine

“The Magdalens” are a series of islands, 3 main, 6 in total, connected by a series of sand dunes. Most people go there via the ferry from Souris PE. That’s what we did, and we were there for 5 days.

The Magdalens have a long and interesting history which is worth looking up, but our visit was mostly focused on beaches (there are over 300k of them) and food, with a few beers and a game of golf tossed in for variation. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves, but, in short, we loved them and want to go back.

The photos below are organized partly chronologically but mostly geographically.

Lined up at the Souris ferry terminal. The ferry is more like cruise ship than a typical BC ferry. Very enjoyable, with live entertainment, bars, and even movable deck chairs.

Cap de l’Hopital, just a short walk from the campsite.
Plage de l’Hopital, 20k long, 36k if you include beach north of a rock outcrop called Point-aux-Loups.
Sun setting at the campsite.
Campsite at dusk.
Lunch at the campsite. The local food and beer are fantastic.
Sunset from the campsite.
Grande-Entree, Havre-aux-Maisons.
Plage de la Pointe, near Grande-Entree
Our favourite beach – Plage du Havre – at the far south end of Havre-Aubert. The sand is perfect – like talcum powder, plus it squeaks with even the softest step. The water is shallow enough that you can wade out 300 metres or so. Water temperature was around 18 degrees, and goes up to 20 in August.

Paddleboarding in Le Bassin, an estuary near Plage du Havre.
La Grave, Havre-Aubert.
Having the local beer after walking through La Grave.
Plage de la dune de l’Ouest.  This beach has the advange of being steps away from a fantastic micro brewery.  The family in this photo lives nearby and arrived by e-bike.  The mother has a cargo bike that can carry 4 of the kids!
Trying the Corne de Brume (foghorn) Scotch Ale.
Cormorant near Etang du Nord
Tern, waiting for fish to surface below, near Etang du Nord.
Club de golf La Madelaine. Beautiful 9-hole course. That is the micro-brewery in the background.
Dune-du-Sud.  This is the wind sport beach.
I tried to photograph these wing surfers, but before I knew it they were 21k down the beach.

The Linda Valerie in dry dock. Val’s mother was named Linda.
Typical home in the countryside – Ile du Havre Aux Maisons
Cap aux Meules harbour.

Great pictures. I think you two change your blog name from “2 sore backs” to “ 2 beach bums” ( meant in a nice way.)
