We made it to Saint John’s!
Our arrival on to the Avalon Peninsula mirrored our arrival into Argentia. The surroundings got foggier the closer we got to Saint John’s. (It was dusk and we were vigilantly checking the side of the highway for moose.)
The next day we had arranged to go out for lunch with my Auntie Linda at The Rooms. The view would have been great but for the fog and rain. No bother, we had a lovely lunch.
Afterwards we went cruising. Auntie Linda was navigating and tour guiding. First we drove around the city – Govt House, Memorial University, the harbour (really large ships), Signal Hill, Waterford Bridge Road. Then we headed north – Outer Cove, Middle Cove, Flatrock Cove, Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto – getting just north of Torbay before heading back to St John’s and finding a Swiss Chalet for dinner.
Here are some photos from our drive that day.

Auntie Linda is originally from Nova Scotia and has lived in Newfoundland as long as I have known her. Linda is my Dad’s second cousin – both have roots back to Canso NS. I asked Linda why she had stayed in Newfoundland. She said she moved to Grand Falls to teach after university. She thought she would stay one year. She never left.
I appreciated Linda’s knowledge of the family history and her patience as I asked similar questions until some of the details stuck in my brain.
The weather did not get much better that day. Fortunately the rain stopped by evening. We didn’t see any more rain for another week!
