Twillingate

After the ferry from Fogo we drove towards Twillingate and set up at Dildo Run Provincial Park.

This was one of our favourite stops, with a nice dry site next to a quiet bay.

Our first introduction to Twillingate was the local shed party. When Val booked the tickets, she was told there was no alcohol but not to worry because everyone gets a hat and that helps shake the inhibitions.

But that depends on the hat.

I have to admit, though, it was a lot of fun.

The next day it was breakfast in Twillingate and then off to the French Beach hike.

Twillingate is across the bay.
Plenty of cliffs and ravines to be careful of.
Crowberries, also called blackberries by locals, carpeted the area and were ripe for picking.
This trail is off of the main one and is a bit sketchy. It’s basically loose scree that falls away to the ocean. The photo I’m taking here is the one below.

A slip could take you a long way down cliffs to the beach below.

Val keeping well away from the edge.
Nearing the end of the trail.

When other travellers ask us what our highlights have been, Newfoundland is always top of list. We’re used to long forested hikes that eventually break through to alpine vistas or ocean views. In Newfoundland, there seem to be incredible 360 degree views every step of the way. That was certainly the case here on the French Beach hike.

To cap off an incredible day, we had dinner at Doyle Sansome and Sons seafood restaurant, which had been recommended by Val’s aunt Linda in St. John’s. There are no reservations there, and lineups are the norm. It was excellent.

Very Cautious hiking indeed, looks like Val had a date with a fine red fellow!

    1. I have to point this out: I did not have a choice of hats.
